Watch Harry Hill Serenade Self Esteem With A Song About Flatpack Furniture
Harry Hill has debuted a Self Esteem inspired song centred around the struggles of putting together flatpack furniture. You can check out the clip below.
The comedian known for his oversized collars recently met up with the Sheffield singer and performer for a new episode of his digital series, The Harry Hill Show, which first premiered earlier this year.
The complete episode is scheduled to premiere on Monday March 23. Ahead of its release, Hill has shared a teaser from his conversation with the artist, whose real name is Rebecca Lucy Taylor. In the clip, he presents a song he created that takes inspiration from her distinctive musical style.
“My songs ultimately are saying ‘Come on then. Come on, carry on’,” Taylor explained at the start of the preview. Hill replied by saying he had “written a song which is in the style of that”, adding that the idea came to him while thinking about “what information I would like to pass onto them”.
He revealed the track was called ‘Instructions For Assembling Flatpack Furniture’, and the lyrics stay completely true to the concept.
“Always start by reading the instruction manual thoroughly, before beginning assembly/ Identify each panel and hardware piece before you start assembling/ Pay close attention to the orientation of each panel, pre drilled holes are often a good indication of this,” Hill performed while a hip hop style backing track played.
“Most of all, get an allen key, you’ll need that for sure/ Organise all parts before starting/ Check the parts against what is included in the box/ Lay out all the components and match them with the diagrams in the manual,” he continued, before finishing with: “If anything is missing, contact the manufacturer before starting assembly/ If all that fails, ask your dad/ Just ask your dad.”
During the performance, Taylor appeared both amused and slightly emotional as she reacted to the unexpected tribute. After it finished, she joked: “Am I going mad? But that was genuinely beautiful.”
“I’ve just realised, it’s a piece of piss doing songs like that,” she laughed, adding that it “gave me a good idea” for future material.
She also pointed out similarities between the joke track and her own song ‘69’ from her most recent album ‘A Complicated Woman’. “I like doing instruction songs or list songs. On my new album there is a list of sex positions and whether I like them or not…”
The full interview with Self Esteem on The Harry Hill Show will be available to watch on Monday March 23.
Hill first built his reputation through stand up comedy before becoming widely known through BBC Two and Channel 4 programmes including Harry Hill’s TV Burp, You’ve Been Framed, and his role as presenter of Junior Bake Off. His latest project launched online in January, with Stewart Lee and Nish Kumar appearing as the first guests.
Recently, he also welcomed Irish singer songwriter CMAT onto the programme, where he admitted he was “such a big fan” of her recent album ‘Euro Country’ after seeing her widely praised Glastonbury 2025 set.
Before their conversation aired, Hill even filmed a playful tribute video in Dublin where he impersonated her for Instagram. The artist later described the moment as both “disrespectful” and at the same time “the most important thing to have ever happened to me in my life”.
CMAT later appeared on the show wearing a hamster costume, and the following week invited Hill to join her onstage during her Alexandra Palace concert in London. During that appearance, the TV Burp host wore a dartboard costume and danced along to ‘Have Fun’ while darts were thrown at the outfit.
The recent appearances from CMAT and Self Esteem also reflect Hill’s long standing love of indie music. In the past he joined Yard Act during their 2023 residency at Leeds’ Brudenell Social Club and also surprised fans by appearing on stage with Black Midi during a London performance.
Speaking with NME in 2023 about his musical tastes, Hill described himself as a proud “6 Music dad”. He added: “I really like The Lemon Twigs [and] the truth is, I’m a massive Beatles fan. I also love Talking Heads, David Byrne and The Smiths. Yard Act have a bit of that. Unfortunately Morrissey has fallen out of favour.”
New episodes of The Harry Hill Show are released weekly on Mondays and can be watched on Spotify and YouTube. Upcoming guests include Ed Gamble, James Acaster, Laura Smyth, Phil Wang, Alex Brooker and others.
In other news related to Harry Hill, the comedian recently admitted that while working on TV Burp, which aired from 2001 to 2012, he became so overworked that he briefly believed someone was trying to kill him.
As for Self Esteem, it was announced yesterday Thursday March 18 that she will become the first musician to headline the newly built British Airways ARC arena in London, which has a capacity of 3,800 people.
The show follows the release of her third studio album ‘A Complicated Woman’ last year, a bold project that she later adapted into a theatrical production staged in London’s West End.
More recently, she has taken the lead role in a new production of David Hare’s 1975 play Teeth n’ Smiles and has spoken about her transition into acting, revealing she has been “rock bottom depressed because of music”.
