Chappell Roan Pulled From Rio Music Event Following Security Dispute

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro has responded after Brazilian footballer Jorginho claimed Chappell Roan’s security team frightened his young daughter.

Writing on X on Saturday March 21, Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere stated that the 28 year old singer would not be welcomed to perform at Todo Mundo no Rio during his time in office. He also said the player’s 11 year old daughter would instead be invited as a special guest at the upcoming festival.

“I mean that as long as I’m in charge of our city, this young lady @ChappellRoan will never perform at Todo Mundo no Rio!” Cavaliere wrote in Portuguese. “I doubt that Shakira would do that! By the way, @FrelloJorginho your little one is already the guest of honor of the organization in May!”

Todo Mundo no Rio is an annual series of free global music shows that take place every May on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro. Madonna led the first edition in 2024, with Lady Gaga following as headliner in 2025. Shakira is scheduled to headline the 2026 event on May 2.

Jorginho responded to the mayor’s message by posting two red heart emojis.

The mayor’s comments came shortly after Jorginho posted a detailed Instagram Story on Saturday. In the post he alleged that Roan’s security team had upset his daughter during an encounter earlier that day at a hotel in São Paulo.

According to Jorginho, his partner Catherine Harding and his 11 year old daughter were staying at the São Paulo hotel before Roan’s scheduled headline performance at Lollapalooza Brazil when they noticed the singer eating breakfast in the hotel restaurant.

“My daughter, like any child, recognised her, got excited, and just wanted to make sure it was really her,” the midfielder shared, noting she didn’t approach Roan or ask for anything.

He alleged the situation quickly became tense when a member of security reportedly approached his family and spoke “in an extremely aggressive manner,” accusing his daughter of being disrespectful and harassing the singer. He also claimed the guard threatened to report them to hotel management, which left his daughter “extremely shaken” and crying.

On Sunday morning March 22, Roan addressed the situation herself through a statement shared on social media.

“I’m just going to tell my half of the story of what happened today with a mother and child who were involved with a security guard who is not my personal security,” Roan said on her Instagram Story while speaking from her bed at the beginning of the clip.

“I didn’t even see,” the singer continued. “I didn’t even see a woman and a child. Like, I did not. No one came up to me. No one bothered me. Like, I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel. I think these people were staying at the hotel as well.”

Roan went on to explain, “I did not ask the security guard to go up to talk to this mother and child. They did not come up to me. They weren’t doing anything. It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have good intentions. When they have no reason to believe, because there’s no action even taken.”

The singer finished her message by making it clear she holds no ill feelings toward fans or children. “I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children. That is crazy. I’m sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming something, that you would do something and that if you felt uncomfortable, that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that.”
