Ozzy Osbourne reveals he felt depressed while recovering from health setbacks

Ozzy Osbourne sank into a deep depression during the final years of his life as he battled a series of serious health issues.

The Black Sabbath legend passed away at the age of 56 on July 22, only 17 days after making his last onstage appearance at the Back to the Beginning farewell concert at Villa Park in his hometown of Birmingham, England.

In the new documentary Ozzy: No Escape from Now — filmed between 2021 and early 2025 — the musician opens up honestly about his mental health struggles and admits that he once thought about taking his own life.

“The thought of not doing any gigs before, I went really into a depression,” he shared in the film. “I’m on antidepressants now, actually. I was getting fking ready to off myself at some point, but then I’ll go there in my head and think, ‘What are you fking talking about?’ Because knowing me, I’d half-do it and I’d be half-dead… I mean, I wouldn’t die, you know? That’s my luck.”

His wife, Sharon Osbourne, said his decline in mood was largely due to not being able to perform live and the metal plates placed in his neck after surgery in 2019.

“Some days, he wishes he was dead. He’s in so much pain, he can’t take it. He just wishes he could go,” she revealed.

In another part of the documentary, Ozzy and Sharon’s son, Jack Osbourne, said the surgeon who operated on his father’s neck “took away his ability to move.”

“The main problem is the nerve damage from the bad neck surgery. Yes, the Parkinson’s is progressing. Yes, it’s showing up in different ways… It makes me so angry because I felt like all of this could’ve been avoided. It didn’t have to happen,” he said through tears.

Ozzy made his Parkinson’s diagnosis public in early 2020. He had also suffered multiple infections in 2019 following a severe fall at his home in Los Angeles that caused major injuries.

Ozzy: No Escape from Now is now available to stream on Paramount+.
