The Police’s Stewart Copeland Rules Out Return for New ‘Spyro’ Music
The Police drummer and founding member Stewart Copeland has revealed that he will not be returning to work on the soundtrack for Spyro: A Realm Beyond.
Copeland was responsible for composing the music for the first four major Spyro The Dragon titles, including Spyro The Dragon, Ripto’s Rage, Year Of The Dragon and Enter The Dragonfly. He later revisited the series in 2018, helping remaster the original music for Spyro Reignited Trilogy while also contributing a brand new track to the collection.
Earlier this month, a new Spyro adventure was officially unveiled, but Copeland has confirmed that he has no involvement with A Realm Beyond. “It’s a new generation. They want a new generation of sound and everything… they’ve got to modernise it,” he told The Independent. “No harm, no foul.”
Spyro: A Realm Beyond marks the franchise’s first completely new instalment in 18 years and is scheduled to arrive early next year. According to Toys For Bob studio head Paul Yan, the team wanted to embrace the nostalgia associated with Spyro while also taking the series in a fresh direction. “Our goal is that we want Spyro to live on for a long time. We want not just one new game, but many new games. We hope that this is the first of many.”
“So we’re going to have to take some risks,” he explained. “We’re going to have to move into new territory. Our goal is to make sure that that evolution is always speaking to something that is authentic and reverential to building on the foundation of what is truly Spyro, and then we’ll take some leaps.”
Following the return of Spyro, speculation has also started to grow that a new Crash Bandicoot game may be in development, alongside reports of a potential movie adaptation.
In other gaming news, the music from the first three Halo titles is set to receive a vinyl release ahead of the launch of the Campaign Evolved remake.
