Madonna Addresses Her Relationship With Her Daughter
Madonna and her daughter Lourdes "Lola" Leon are using music to address the complexities of their relationship on their new collaboration, "The Test," featured on the Queen of Pop's latest album, Confession II.
The 67 year old music icon and her 29 year old daughter co wrote the deeply personal track after Lola suggested they create something together that could express feelings they had struggled to communicate over the years. She explained that while there is plenty of love between them, there are also emotions and unresolved tensions that have often gone unspoken.
Speaking with Bob the Drag Queen during iHeartRadio and TikTok LIVE Premiere With Madonna, Lola said: “It was my idea. There’s a lot of love that’s unspoken, but also a lot of tension and emotions that kind of are difficult to put into words, because it can be so emotional.
“A way that I thought would be easier for us to speak about these things would be maybe through art, which is always something that my mom and I have connected over. That’s really brought us together.”
Madonna described the experience of writing the song as “a very magical moment,” noting that both she and Lola had to allow themselves to be completely vulnerable throughout the creative process.
On "The Test," Madonna reflects on the impact her extraordinary level of fame had on her daughter while she was growing up. In the opening verse, she sings: "Little star / I tried to put you on a pedestal / You didn't ask for all the flashing lights / I didn't think of how it could disturb.
"Or how it hurt / I wish I knew / The pain I've caused / My butterfly / Was always being watched."
The opening lyric also serves as a nod to Madonna's 1998 song "Little Star," which she wrote for Lola shortly after her birth.
Lola's verse shifts the perspective, expressing gratitude for her mother's influence while emphasizing the importance of forging her own identity.
She sings: "A hand tenderly reaching to me / You are my reason to be / Or what I want, or look like / What I wear, all the clothes on my back.
"And what I attract / I trace the line of what you have sewn / Keep my own design / Make it a landscape / Make it alive."
The song's chorus explores the challenges of living under public scrutiny. Madonna sings about feeling as though people have constantly "tried to put us to the test" while admitting, "Sometimes I think you wish I'd go away / But my shadow stays and it's okay to be yourself."
Lola later responds with her own heartfelt perspective, singing: "I know they tried to put us to the test / I'm not the same when I'm hanging on your coattail.
"Sometimes I wish I could multiply you / But I know you are all around me / You are all around me."
Madonna recently shared that the collaboration came from a deeply personal place, revealing that the song was written with a clear purpose in mind.
She told Interview magazine: “[Lola] approached me about writing a song together as a way to heal our relationship.”
