Lewis Capaldi Confirms He Is Working on a New Album at TRNSMT

Lewis Capaldi already has his next record on his mind. The Scottish singer-songwriter brought TRNSMT Festival in Glasgow to a close on Sunday night (June 21), using his headline slot to let fans know that new music is on the horizon.

Capaldi revealed to the audience that once his remaining summer performances are complete, he intends to step away from touring once again and dedicate his time to songwriting. “After this summer,” he said, “I’m gonna go away for a bit and make an album.”

The announcement came during an emotional performance at Glasgow Green, where Capaldi openly reflected on the challenging period that followed his previous TRNSMT appearance in 2022. He released his second album, Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent, the next year, but later withdrew from touring and live appearances as he dealt with both mental and physical health issues.

“My mental health took a beating,” Capaldi told the TRNSMT crowd, adding that he is now “back” and “feeling better.”

His return to the stage has been especially significant for fans. During his Glastonbury Pyramid Stage set in 2023, Capaldi was forced to end the performance early while coping with tics associated with Tourette’s syndrome, with the audience famously helping him finish “Someone You Loved.” Soon after, he announced that he would be taking a lengthy break to focus on his wellbeing.

Since that time, Capaldi has gradually returned to the spotlight and live music, including a surprise appearance at Glastonbury last year and the release of “Survive,” his first new song since Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent.

His latest comeback follows a hugely successful run commercially. “Someone You Loved” spent three weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in 2019, received a Grammy nomination for song of the year and helped establish his debut album, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, as a worldwide success.

Capaldi still has several summer performances ahead, including major outdoor appearances at BST Hyde Park and Roundhay Festival in July, along with shows in Liverpool, Newcastle and at Sziget Festival. Although details such as a title, release date and tracklist for the new album remain under wraps, his remarks at TRNSMT offer one of the strongest indications yet that a new full-length release is firmly in the works.
