Kylie Minogue claims the top spot on the UK Christmas charts
Kylie Minogue has landed her first ever Christmas number one in the UK.
The 57 year old singer has reached the top of the festive charts for the first time with XMAS, a milestone that also makes her the first woman to score number one singles across four separate decades.
Kylie, who has sold more than 80 million records throughout her career, told Official Charts: "It’s hard to put into words how special this feels.
"Being Christmas number one really is the most wonderful gift. I’m so grateful to everyone who’s been listening and spreading the love and I’m wishing you all a very Merry Christmas."
Kylie has also become the first solo female artist in 12 years to take the Christmas number one spot in the UK. Her single sits ahead of Last Christmas by Wham! and Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You.
Elsewhere, Kylie recently revealed that she experienced “really bad migraines” while working on her Kylie Christmas (Fully Wrapped) album.
The chart topper returned to the studio to refresh her 2015 festive album Kylie Christmas, adding four new songs to the tracklist, though the sessions proved challenging as she struggled with severe headaches.
Speaking to NME, Kylie shared: "When I listen to the songs now, it feels really good. It felt like Christmas, even if I was in the studio in tears sometimes because I was having really bad migraines."
Kylie also admitted she quietly hoped XMAS might reach the top of the UK charts.
She said: "It would be amazing, but I honestly didn’t think about that when we first started this promo. I was so focused on everything else, finishing things up and handling all the other details, but now that we’re here …
"It would be lovely. But I’m also okay either way because it’s such a sought after position and strange things happen at Christmas, so it never feels completely predictable."
