On Tuesday January 20, President Trump held a press conference at the White House while standing beside a large stack of documents labelled “accomplishments”. He spent more than 90 minutes reading from them in a flat tone. As the speech continued, the claims grew increasingly repetitive and odd, including the line “I love Hispanic”, xenophobic remarks about Somalia, and a renewed insistence that he won the 2020 election.
He also praised coal as “clean, beautiful coal” and announced he would rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of Trump”, later suggesting it was meant as a joke. At one point, the event descended into an awkward moment involving a paperclip. “Woo!” he said. “I’m glad my finger wasn’t in that sucker. That could’ve dome some damage, but you know what? I wouldn’t have shown the pain. I would’ve gone back. Boy, did you hear that? That was nasty. But I would not have shown the pain. I would’ve acted like nothing happened as my finger fell off.”
The White Stripes frontman turned solo artist, who has long been outspoken in his criticism of Trump, later shared his response on Instagram. “Me do accomplishments!” White wrote. “Trump smart. Good boy deserve Nobel Peace Prize! Dementia? What is? NO! Trump smart, pass brain test, name giraffe. Me President of Venezuela and Canada.
“Me want Greenland too for fun. Mom said Trump could have been great baseball player but also big building with bars on windows. Building for very sick people. Trump not sick. Trump smart. MAGA. Very smart people made Trump President. Very smart people keep Trump President. Take nap now. Use fake, I mean real Peace Prizes for pillows. Trump accomplishment. Nighty night.”
White later addressed critics of his post, telling those who disagreed to check out Ted Nugent or Kid Rock, both known supporters of Trump. “Anyone who likes said comment gets blocked too. i leave a couple up so everyone knows why they were blocked. This is my house, not town square. ted nugent and kid rock i’m sure are looking for more MAGA supporters so i suggest you head over to their houses. thank you for your attention to this matter!”
In contrast, the post drew supportive reactions from Garbage, Butch Walker, who wrote “I love you,” and Cat Power, who commented: “KING OF THE BADDASSES U ARE MY BELOVED FRIEND.”
Last month, White also clashed with Republican congressman Tim Burchett after the politician compared him to Wednesday Addams. Responding to what appeared to be an AI generated video showing White saying, “Don’t even think about listening to my music, you fascist,” Burchett replied: “That cute little girl from the Addams Family got really ugly and angry.”
White responded by writing: “Can you believe that a U.S. congressman, that’s right, a CONGRESSMAN (from my state no less), a once hallowed and respected position in our society, would repost an AI generated video, containing a false comment that I never said and refuted (without researching that I might add) and like a 10 year old on a playground, add to it attempted insults to my physical appearance? What kind of joke are we all living in now?”
Before that, White was among several high profile figures to criticise Trump over what he described as “vile” comments surrounding Rob Reiner’s death, after Trump falsely suggested it was connected to his criticism of him.
The guitarist and Third Man Records founder branded Trump a “disgusting, vile, egomaniac loser, child”, adding: “Neither he nor any one of his followers can defend this gross, horrible insult to a beautiful artist who gave the world so much. To use someone’s tragic death to promote your own vanity and fascist authoritarian agenda is a corrupt and narcissistic sin.”
“Shame on you trump and anyone who defends this,” he continued. “God bless you Rob Reiner and thank you for what you gave the world. I never even met you and I still stand by you.”
The White House had previously dismissed White as a “has been loser” in response to his criticism of Trump, prompting White to describe Trump as “an embarrassment to American history”.
